Catalina Museum: Conserving the Islands Rich History for Future Generations
Do you know the history of Catalina and how it became the beloved destination it is today? During our first trip to the island, we visited the Catalina Museum for Art & History to learn about the island’s unique and vibrant history. Within the 18,000 square foot space, guests are invited to explore detailed collections of Catalina artifacts, photographs, the island’s connection to the Chicago Cubs, its role in World War II, and more. If you have never visited this museum, it’s worth checking out.
Perspective! Avalon is home to 8,000 residents while the rest of the island remains mostly untouched.
Established in 1953, the basement of the Catalina Casino was home to the Museum up until 2016 when it finally found a more suitable space to call it’s own. The museum boasts a theatre room featuring a film that shares a brief overview of the islands history, community meeting areas and a well curated space wherein lies the permanent displays. The outdoor rooftop space can accommodate private events such as wedding receptions, birthday parties and more.

Some interesting fact about the Island:
• The Catalina Casino was built in 1929 as a place of gathering. Gambling has never been offered there.
• Avalon Bird Park, once home to almost 8,000 birds closed down in 1966.
• Residents pick up their mail at the post office as there is no delivery service.
• A 3rd Street, but no 1st or 2nd streets
• Wm. Wrigley, Jr. was briefly interned at the Wrigley Memorial before being moved to Glendale, CA. The Mausoleum is still there.
• The Union Barracks, dating back to the Civil War, are still standing in Two Harbors.
• There are no stop lights on the island
• There is a 20+ year waiting list to own a full-size vehicle. Most residents travel by golf cart.
• There is a herd of non native bison that roam the island brought over by the film industry in the 20’s.
• Catalina Island is part of Los Angeles County. Avalon incorporated in 1913 becoming the 30th city in the county.
We walked away for this museum with a huge appreciating for the island and a better understanding of the continued conservation efforts to keep the island as natural yet accessible to all.

MUSEUM HOURS
The museum is open from Tuesday - Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Closed Mondays, New Year's Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
